- Saté(Satay, sah-TAY)
- An Indonesian favourite consisting of small marinated cubes of meat, fish or poultry threaded on skewers and grilled over fiery coals or broiled. Saté is usually served with a spicy peanut sauce. It's a favourite snack food but is also often served for an appetizer and sometimes as a main dish.
Indonesian Cooking
Contemporary Indonesian cooking is a rich and complex blend of many cultures. Dutch, Chinese, Spanish, Portuguese, Middle Eastern, and British influences can be seen in much of the present-day food, but proximity to South East Asia has also had a strong influence on the cuisine of Indonesia. Dutch influence is mainly shown in the use of many common western vegetables. Some of the distinctive ingredients used in Indonesian food are coconut, peanuts, sweet soy and a spicy shrimp paste.
Our Indonesian cuisine focuses on all natural ingredients where vegetables are either sautéed or steamed. When sautéed, small amounts of oil are used to help vegetables retain their vitamins and they are then slowly simmered in small amounts of flavoured broth. When steamed, the vegetables naturally retain their nutrients and sweetness, and are steamed until just tender. Our style of cooking has the nutritional advantages of having low fat content, and the spices and fish pastes we use have no preservatives or additives allowing for our foods to be a healthy part of any diet.
If you enjoy the chilli peppers, peanut sauces and stewed curries of Thailand, the lemon grass and fish sauce of Vietnam, the intricate spice blends of India and the cooking methods of Asia as a whole, then Indonesian food will surely delight you!
